As we near the year mark for name, image, and likeness (NIL),the NCAA conducted a survey where many college athletes indicated that they would like more educational NIL resources. The survey included responses from more than 9,800 athletes from each division. NIL has provided many opportunities for college athletes to make money and reap the rewards and benefits of their athletic reputation. Along with those opportunities has come the need to be familiar with certain business and marketing concepts. For example, college athletes now need to have a basic understanding of intellectual property, business entities, and taxes.
Accordingly, in the NCAA's survey 39% of women's sports athletes and 42% men's college athletes are looking for more NIL resources. Specifically, college athletes are looking for resources to assist with navigating the new NIL landscape. Some state NIL laws requires schools to implement courses to cover subjects such as financial literacy, intellectual property and entrepreneurship. However, not every school has the resources to provide these courses and educational platforms. Some schools have partnerships with companies to provide the necessary education. However, not all schools have those partnerships.
As the NIL landscape continues to evolve, so will the needs of college athletes. NIL With The Esquire Coach will be a resource for current and prospective college athletes and those who work with them. Checkout our current NIL Resource Links and our NIL Resource Guides.
